Bhopal: Despite paying premiums of the crop insurance scheme, farmers in Madhya Pradesh are facing a crisis. The government had launched the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bhima Yojana in 2016 precisely to address crops ravaged by uncertain weather. However, the payout under the scheme is very small.
Hit by unseasonal rains and hailstorms last year, produce from 32-year-old Surendra Singh's 4 acre land in Bairagarh near Bhopal has been negligible. The crop insurance scheme failed to cover his losses even after paying regular premiums. The reality on the ground is appalling as insurance payouts are rare and farmers are finding it difficult to earn back basic input cost. Farmers in the state are forced to sell the crops at prices lower than the minimum support price (MSP).
