Civil society activists are apprehensive about the changes proposed in the MGNREGA wage payments system
-Press release by NREGA Sangharsh Morcha Secretariat dated 2nd June, 2021 In a letter dated 2nd June, 2021, written to Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister, Rural Development, NREGA Sangharsh Morcha -- a civil society group working on labour rights -- has opposed the recent move by the Ministry of Rural Development that changes the system of NREGA wage payments in such a manner that separate labour budgets and payment orders are to be prepared for workers in the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories. Under the new modalities, there will be separate budget heads for different categories of workers (SC, ST and others), separate “fund transfer orders” (FTO), and even separate Labour Budgets. According to the NREGA Sangharsh Morcha Secretariat, the constant re-jigging of NREGA wage payment systems has done enormous damage over the years. Every time the system is modified, MGNREGA workers are pushed to cope with “teething problems” that often last months or years.
