Kendrapada: The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has failed to take off in 21 gram panchayats of Kendrapada district. The district collector has decided to take disciplinary action against the sarpanchs and panchayat executive officers of these panchayats.

District collector Niranjan Nayak said, "The administration has already issued show-cause notices to the sarpanchs and panchayat executive officers of Bagada, Dashipur, Silipur, Bachara, Balipatana, Baluria, Nilakanthapur, Penthapala, Mangalpur, Koranda, Pradhanpada, Pegarapada, Aragala, Attala, Badambila, Bhuinpur, Kuladiha, Narendrapur, Nuapada, Padanipala and Sansida gram panchayats for gross negligence in executing works under MGNREGA."

The centrally-sponsored MGNREGA scheme is meant for the poor and aims at providing livelihood security to people in rural areas by guaranteeing 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to a rural household, he added.

Rubbishing all allegations, Nuapada gram panchayat sarpanch Prakash Kumar Nayak said many villagers are not interested in working under MGNREGA schemes owing to the low wages. "These days, one gets about Rs 200 to Rs 300 by doing odd works in the village and neighbouring areas, but the government has fixed the daily wage of a worker at only Rs 146. This is the reason why nobody is ready to work under MNREGA," he explained.

"For the past 18 months, I have not spent a single pie on MGNREGA work in our gram panchayat for this reason. Last year, the district administration had slapped a fine of Rs 1,000 on me owing to no progress of work under the scheme and I paid the amount. This year too, I am ready to pay the fine," he said.
