In 2009, the government enacted the Right to Education Act (RTE), an Act which entitles every child between 6 and 14 years to free and compulsory education under Article 21a of the Indian Constitution. The Act makes education a fundamental right of every child between the age of 6 and 14 and specifies minimum norms in elementary schools. It came into effect in 2010, though now after 5 years the country has missed two deadlines to fully implement it. This report analyses the various aspects of the Right to Education Act, its successes and its failures.
